Should you pick off the scab in your ear piercing?
Generally, it is not recommended to pick off scabs from a pierced ear. If discomfort occurs, prompt medical attention is advised. The specific reasons are as follows:
Scabbing is a natural part of the wound healing process and helps protect the wound by reducing the risk of pathogen invasion, thereby promoting the healing of the ear piercing. Picking at the scab may damage the skin around the ear canal and increase the risk of infection, which can impair the healing process. Therefore, it is not advisable to remove ear piercing scabs manually. Instead, patients can gently clean the scabbed area around the piercing with warm water, carefully dry the ear piercing and surrounding skin with a clean, soft towel, and avoid using irritating chemicals or soap to maintain the health of the piercing.
During the healing period, contact with dirty water should be avoided. Disinfectants such as iodine tincture or hydrogen peroxide should be used under medical guidance to keep the piercing site clean and support proper healing.
