Introduction
1. Dietary regulation: Coix seed (Job’s tears) is the top choice; cooking it into porridge with red beans enhances its effects more noticeably. 2. Increased physical activity, such as running or swimming. 3. Back gua sha (scraping therapy): This improves capillary activity and promotes heat dissipation and dampness elimination. 4. Cupping therapy for dampness removal: After cupping, one typically feels lighter and more relaxed—indicating that the treatment has taken effect.

Generally speaking, symptoms such as frequent “heatiness” (a traditional Chinese medicine concept referring to excessive internal heat), recurrent acne, oily face and hair, poor sleep quality, vivid dreams, or insomnia are typically associated with excessive dampness in the body. So, what is the most effective way to eliminate dampness? Below, we address this question.

The Most Effective Ways to Eliminate Dampness

1. Dietary Regulation

Dietary therapy is the most direct and effective method for eliminating dampness. Among dietary remedies, coix seed (Job’s tears) stands out as a top choice. Consuming an appropriate amount of coix seed helps promote diuresis, reduce edema, strengthen the spleen, and resolve dampness. Its efficacy is further enhanced when cooked together with red beans into a porridge. Coix seed and red bean porridge can also be prepared as a decoction for drinking. However, because coix seed is relatively hard, it should first be soaked for at least half a day before cooking. For added nourishment, rice and dried red dates may also be included when preparing the porridge.

2. Increasing Physical Activity

A sedentary lifestyle contributes significantly to the accumulation of dampness. Therefore, increasing physical activity is essential for dampness removal. Suitable exercises include running, swimming, and other aerobic activities that enhance the body’s water metabolism. During exercise, surface pores open to dissipate heat, allowing sweat—containing substantial amounts of dampness—to be expelled. Thus, regular physical activity effectively aids in eliminating dampness.

3. Back Gua Sha (Scraping Therapy)

The upper one-third of the back—particularly the shoulder and upper back region—is especially susceptible to external wind invasion. Gua sha applied to the back enhances microcirculation and promotes heat dissipation and dampness elimination. A gua sha board or ceramic spoon may be used, lubricated with a small amount of essential oil or olive oil. Begin scraping unidirectionally downward along the spine, then repeat the same downward motion along two parallel lines located 1.5 cun (approximately 2 inches) and 3 cun (approximately 4 inches) lateral to the spine, respectively.

4. Cupping Therapy for Dampness Removal

Cupping therapy, a common practice in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), is also highly effective for resolving dampness. Beginners are advised to start with smaller-sized cups to minimize skin irritation. After cupping, individuals often experience a sense of lightness and relief—indicating successful treatment. Mild side effects such as localized redness, swelling, small blisters, petechiae (tiny red spots), or bruising are normal and require no concern.
