Introduction
1. Common cold: Sore throat, dryness, itching, and cough are common early symptoms of the common cold. 2. Climate: Dry winter weather, often accompanied by smog. 3. Internal heat accumulation (“Shanghuo”): Excessive consumption of fried, spicy, or heavily seasoned foods can disrupt the body’s yin-yang balance, leading to internal heat. 4. Tonsillitis: Frequently causes throat pain. 5. Chronic pharyngitis: The persistent inflammation associated with chronic pharyngitis can irritate the throat.

A dry, itchy throat accompanied by coughing can stem from numerous causes. If such symptoms occur frequently, it is essential to strengthen preventive measures in daily life. In addition to symptomatic pharmacological treatment, attention should also be paid to dietary regulation, adequate hydration, and sufficient rest. So, what exactly causes a dry, itchy throat and cough? Below, we address this question.

What Causes a Dry, Itchy Throat and Cough?

1. Common Cold

The common cold is an acute upper respiratory tract infection caused by viruses or influenza. Early-stage colds often present with sore throat, dryness, itchiness, and coughing. Spring and transitional seasons are peak periods for colds; therefore, extra caution—especially regarding warmth—is advised.

2. Climate

Winter’s dry climate, combined with occasional smog, easily leads to throat dryness and discomfort. Areas with high levels of airborne dust are particularly prone to triggering throat-related conditions.

3. Excess Internal Heat (“Shanghuo”)

Consuming excessive amounts of fried, spicy, or otherwise “heat-inducing” foods disrupts the body’s yin-yang balance, resulting in excessive internal heat rising upward to the throat—causing soreness, dryness, itchiness, and even coughing.

4. Tonsillitis

Tonsillitis is a common condition among children and adolescents, frequently causing throat pain. Individuals with spleen- and lung-qi deficiency often experience dryness, pruritus (itching), mild cough, and scant, viscous phlegm. Antibiotic therapy—such as penicillin—may be used for anti-inflammatory management.

5. Chronic Pharyngitis

Chronic pharyngitis involves persistent inflammation that irritates the throat, leading to symptoms including dryness, itchiness, and coughing. Typically, patients also experience throat pain and a dry cough; however, the cough is generally mild.
