What type of milk is best for pregnant women?
Drinking pasteurized (UHT) milk is generally beneficial for pregnant women; however, some nutrients are lost during the ultra-high-temperature (UHT) sterilization process. Milk is rich in calcium and high-quality protein, providing essential nutrition for both the mother and the developing fetus. When purchasing milk, it is advisable to select products labeled “no added ingredients” and to store milk properly to prevent spoilage. Pregnant women with access to fresh milk—also known as pasteurized (pasteurized at low temperature) milk—may opt for this alternative. Pasteurization effectively eliminates harmful bacteria while preserving milk’s nutritional content to the greatest extent possible; however, its shelf life is short (approximately 3 days), so it should be consumed promptly.
Pregnant women who dislike drinking milk or who have lactose intolerance may choose yogurt instead. For those experiencing elevated blood glucose levels during pregnancy, low-fat milk and sugar-free yogurt are recommended options.
