Introduction
Skin grafting technique: During skin graft surgery, the surgeon holds the handle of the dermatome with their dominant hand and presses the dermatome against the skin surface; the width of the graft is determined according to clinical requirements. When initiating the cut, the blade is angled at approximately 40 degrees relative to the skin surface; this angle may then be gradually reduced to about 20 degrees, or adjusted as needed based on intraoperative conditions.

Birthmarks are a common condition present from birth for many individuals. If a birthmark is located in an inconspicuous area, it generally does not require significant concern. However, if it appears on highly visible areas—such as the face—it may necessitate treatment, as it can substantially affect one’s appearance. So, how can birthmarks be removed? Details are provided below:

How to Remove Birthmarks

Isotope Therapy

Some individuals have previously attempted isotope therapy to remove birthmarks; however, results have been less effective than anticipated. Although initial treatment may show some inhibitory effect, this approach often leads to various complications or sequelae.

Skin Grafting

During skin grafting, the surgeon holds the scalpel handle with their dominant hand and applies gentle pressure of the dermatome onto the donor skin surface. The width of the harvested skin graft is determined according to clinical requirements. The blade is initially angled at approximately 40° relative to the skin surface; this angle may then be gradually reduced to about 20°, depending on the specific surgical needs. The roller is moved back-and-forth in a sawing motion with minimal amplitude, sliding steadily from one end to the other until a graft of the desired size is obtained. The harvested skin graft is then excised and transplanted onto the birthmark site. This procedure must be performed exclusively by qualified medical professionals and is not suitable for self-administration.

Laser Ablation

Laser ablation utilizes the photothermal effect of laser energy to penetrate deep into the skin, causing pigment within the birthmark to vaporize or fragment—thereby effectively removing the lesion. This method yields excellent clinical outcomes. Modern lasers employ different wavelengths tailored to specific pigment types, making laser therapy currently the most effective and widely recommended approach for birthmark removal. Procedure details: Local anesthesia is administered first, followed by laser irradiation using an appropriate wavelength and probe selected based on the color and characteristics of the birthmark.
