Introduction
1. In the past, birthmarks were removed using electrocautery or cryotherapy; for severe cases, surgical excision followed by skin grafting was performed. 2. Currently, laser therapy is considered the most effective treatment for birthmarks. 3. During treatment, birthmarks located on areas of thinner, more delicate skin are more difficult to remove, and post-treatment scars tend to heal poorly.

Birthmarks are generally categorized into two main types: pigmented and vascular. Common pigmented birthmarks include nevus of Ota, congenital melanocytic nevi, and café-au-lait spots; vascular birthmarks include port-wine stains and strawberry hemangiomas. Birthmarks may be present at birth or may only become apparent several months after birth. So, how can birthmarks be removed? Below, we address this question.

How to Remove Birthmarks

1. In the past, birthmarks were commonly treated using electrocautery or cryotherapy. For severe cases, surgical excision followed by skin grafting was performed. However, these methods often resulted in scarring and compromised cosmetic outcomes. Currently, laser therapy is the most widely used and preferred treatment approach.

2. Laser therapy is currently considered one of the most effective treatments for birthmarks. Typically, patients achieve noticeable improvement—or even complete clearance—after 4–6 laser sessions. Among various birthmarks, bluish (e.g., nevus of Ota) lesions respond most favorably to treatment, whereas red (e.g., port-wine stains) and black (e.g., melanocytic nevi) birthmarks tend to be more resistant.

3. Treatment is more challenging on areas with thinner, more delicate skin, where wound healing may be delayed and scarring more likely. Facial birthmarks are especially difficult to treat due to the face’s exceptionally thin and sensitive skin. Moreover, individuals with a predisposition to keloid or hypertrophic scarring face even greater therapeutic challenges.

Knowledge Extension: Reasons Why Birthmarks May Persist Despite Treatment

1. Misconceptions

Many patients mistakenly believe that birthmarks require no special treatment if they are not located on the face and cause no pain or itching. However, untreated birthmarks may be associated with or progress to conditions such as Mongolian spots, Ito nevi, blue nevi, or hemangiomas.

2. Uninformed or Hasty Treatment

Some patients, upon learning of their birthmark diagnosis, become anxious and seek rapid resolution without undergoing proper, evidence-based evaluation and diagnosis. As a result, inappropriate or non-targeted therapies are administered, potentially leading to adverse outcomes.

3. Failure to Follow Medical Advice

After identifying an appropriate treatment, some patients assume that simply entrusting care to a physician guarantees success—and consequently become complacent. Irregular treatment adherence (“three days fishing, two days drying nets”) leads to incomplete therapy and subsequent recurrence of the birthmark.

4. Relying on Folk Remedies

Unscrupulous practitioners exploit patients’ urgent desire for treatment by promoting unproven “folk remedies” or “secret formulas,” ultimately defrauding them financially—and sometimes worsening their condition or delaying appropriate medical care.

The above outlines key considerations regarding birthmark removal. We hope this information proves helpful to you.
