Introduction
In China, the diagnostic criteria for anemia at sea level are as follows: hemoglobin (Hb) < 120 g/L in adult males; Hb < 110 g/L in adult females (non-pregnant); and Hb < 100 g/L in pregnant women. Due to China’s vast territory, normal reference ranges may vary slightly across different regions. Additionally, hemoglobin concentrations in infants, children, and pregnant women are generally lower than those in adults.

Anemia is a syndrome characterized by a reduction in the volume of red blood cells (RBCs) in peripheral blood below the lower limit of the normal reference range, resulting in insufficient oxygen delivery to tissues. Clinically, hemoglobin (Hb) concentration is commonly used to diagnose anemia.

Which parameter in a complete blood count (CBC) indicates anemia?

In China, the diagnostic criteria for anemia at sea level are as follows: Hb < 120 g/L in adult males; Hb < 110 g/L in adult females (non-pregnant); and Hb < 100 g/L in pregnant women. Due to China’s vast territory, normal reference ranges may vary slightly across different regions. Moreover, Hb concentrations are naturally lower in infants, children, and pregnant women compared with healthy adults, while residents living long-term at high altitudes typically have higher normal Hb values than those residing at sea level.

As shown above, anemia is primarily diagnosed using the hemoglobin value from the CBC.

Additionally, the severity of anemia can be classified based on the Hb value from the CBC: – Extremely severe anemia: Hb < 30 g/L – Severe anemia: Hb 30–60 g/L – Moderate anemia: Hb 60–90 g/L – Mild anemia: Hb 90 g/L to the lower limit of the normal reference range

Furthermore, other CBC parameters—such as mean corpuscular volume (MCV) and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC)—help classify anemia into macrocytic, normocytic, or microcytic hypochromic types.

However, identifying the underlying cause of anemia is crucial for patients diagnosed with anemia. Therefore, further diagnostic testing is essential to determine the etiology, enabling more targeted and effective treatment.

We hope the above information is helpful. Wishing you good health and happiness!
