Introduction
Patients with oral ulcers are generally advised to avoid drinking beer. Beer contains alcohol, which can irritate the oral mucosa in individuals with oral ulcers, causing a burning sensation and pain, thereby delaying ulcer healing. Additionally, alcohol consumption may weaken the body’s immune defenses and potentially exacerbate oral ulcer symptoms.

Oral ulcers—commonly known as “mouth sores”—are a frequent condition characterized by ulcerative lesions on the oral mucosa. They commonly occur on the inner surface of the lips, tongue, ventral surface of the tongue, buccal mucosa, vestibular groove, and soft palate—areas where the mucosa lacks keratinization or is only minimally keratinized. So, can individuals with oral ulcers drink beer? Below, we address this question.

Can individuals with oral ulcers drink beer?

Generally, drinking beer is not recommended for individuals with oral ulcers.

Beer contains alcohol, which can irritate the oral mucosa in patients with oral ulcers, causing burning sensations and pain, thereby delaying ulcer healing. Additionally, alcohol consumption may weaken the body’s immune defenses and potentially exacerbate oral ulcer symptoms.

Moreover, individuals with oral ulcers should seek timely treatment. Medications such as cydiodine lozenges, cetylpyridinium chloride lozenges, and dehydrocholic acid lozenges may be used—these possess broad-spectrum antimicrobial and astringent properties. Topical application of recombinant human epidermal growth factor (rhEGF) gel or recombinant bovine basic fibroblast growth factor (rb-bFGF) gel to the ulcer site can also promote healing.

It is advisable to use medications strictly as prescribed by a healthcare provider and avoid self-medication. Patients should also maintain a balanced diet, avoiding spicy, irritating foods and acidic fruits. Instead, they should consume more fresh vegetables and fruits, as well as zinc-rich foods—such as carrots, oranges, eggplants, peanuts, and walnuts—and drink plenty of water. Smoking and alcohol consumption should be avoided entirely.

The above provides an overview of whether individuals with oral ulcers can drink beer. We hope this information is helpful to you.
