Introduction
Headache and dry mouth may indicate cerebral hypoperfusion in the patient. For instance, if the patient has recently consumed insufficient water, effective circulating blood volume may decrease, leading to hemoconcentration. Cerebral hypoperfusion can cause dizziness, and hemoconcentration may result in dry mouth.

Many people notice dry mouth and thirst, often accompanied by headaches, particularly during autumn. Many attribute these symptoms to seasonal weather changes and thus tend to overlook them. So what causes headache and dry mouth? Below, we address this question.

What Causes Headache and Dry Mouth?

Headache and dry mouth may indicate cerebral hypoperfusion (inadequate blood supply to the brain). For instance, if a patient has recently consumed insufficient fluids, circulating blood volume may decrease, leading to hemoconcentration (increased concentration of blood components). Cerebral hypoperfusion can cause dizziness, while hemoconcentration contributes to dry mouth.

Another possible cause is an upper respiratory tract infection (URTI), which may be accompanied by fever. Bacterial or viral toxins can trigger headache in such cases.

Additionally, low-grade fever associated with URTI is commonly linked to infection-related headache. In this state, the body’s mild febrile response may manifest as dry mouth, while overt fever symptoms remain subtle. Patients are advised to measure their temperature and undergo routine blood tests and acute-phase reactant testing (e.g., C-reactive protein) at a hospital.

Fever itself can also cause dry mouth, as elevated body temperature increases insensible water loss, resulting in thirst. Therefore, individuals experiencing fever and dry mouth should promptly seek medical evaluation—including complete blood count (CBC)—to identify the underlying cause and receive appropriate treatment.

The above outlines potential causes of headache and dry mouth. We hope this information is helpful to you.
