Introduction
The exact cause and pathogenesis of mesenteric panniculitis remain incompletely understood. However, based on years of clinical research, experts have found that the disease may be associated with several adverse factors, including impaired immune function, trauma to mesenteric adipose tissue, subacute infections, local ischemia, administration of certain specific drugs, or allergic reactions.

Mesenteric panniculitis is a rare, chronic, nonspecific inflammatory condition affecting the adipose tissue of the mesentery, characterized by necrosis, chronic inflammation, and fibrosis of mesenteric fat.

Etiology of Mesenteric Panniculitis

The precise etiology and pathogenesis of mesenteric panniculitis remain incompletely understood. However, extensive clinical research has suggested that its development may be associated with several adverse factors, including impaired immune function, trauma to mesenteric adipose tissue, subacute infections, local ischemia, administration of certain specific medications, or allergic reactions. These factors may trigger excessive growth and degeneration of adipose tissue, leading to fat necrosis and xanthogranulomatous inflammation. Normal lipid substances are released from degenerated adipocytes, followed by granulation tissue infiltration and progressive fibrosis—ultimately resulting in disease onset and progression.

Mesenteric panniculitis is a rare mesenteric disorder. Clinically, it commonly presents with abdominal pain, an abdominal mass, diarrhea, and/or ascites. In most cases, patients respond well to effective treatment, with favorable prognoses. With supportive therapy over several months to years, abdominal pain typically gradually subsides and abdominal masses progressively shrink. Therefore, patients must adhere to consistent, effective treatment and undergo regular follow-up visits.

The above outlines the etiology of mesenteric panniculitis. We hope this information is helpful to you.
