What causes a raised, hard lump after wound healing?
Most surgical procedures require wound closure upon completion—especially for wounds resulting from subcutaneous tumors or fractures—making postoperative suturing highly likely. Therefore, meticulous wound care is essential during the healing period to minimize scarring. But what does it mean when a raised, firm nodule appears after wound healing?

What Causes a Raised, Firm Nodule After Wound Healing?
This phenomenon is typically attributed to hypertrophic scar tissue. Patients exhibiting this condition often possess a predisposition to keloid or hypertrophic scarring (i.e., “scar-prone” constitution). Under the influence of surgical trauma and wound healing, excessive collagen deposition may occur, leading to abnormal scar proliferation. Such scars not only compromise cosmetic appearance but may also cause pruritus (itching) and sharp, stabbing pain around the wound site. Several therapeutic options are available to address these symptoms:
1. The most effective current approach involves surgical excision of the scar followed by topical radioisotope therapy. This combination effectively suppresses excessive proliferation of fibrous connective tissue and helps prevent recurrence of the raised scar.
2. Alternatively, intralesional corticosteroid injections may be administered to soften the scar tissue and promote its regression.
A localized firm nodule appearing post-healing—particularly one aligned along the incision line—and accompanied by symptoms such as stabbing pain, pruritus, or subcutaneous tension—may signal early-stage scar hypertrophy. Common underlying causes include genetic predisposition to abnormal scarring or compromised immune function, both of which can trigger excessive collagen synthesis at the wound site. Treatment options include topical scar gels, intralesional injections, and laser therapy. Additionally, oral vitamin C supplementation or topical application of vitamin E may help inhibit scar formation to some extent.
