Introduction
A baby’s runny nose with clear mucus mixed with yellow mucus is often associated with the common cold or rhinitis, and medication may be used for treatment. 1. Common cold: This is a relatively common illness. Due to their underdeveloped immune systems, infants are highly susceptible to colds following exposure to cold temperatures. Symptoms may include coughing, phlegm production, sore throat, fever, and nasal discharge—initially clear but later mixed with yellow mucus.

Every winter, many children experience runny noses. In households where care is less attentive, children may constantly have nasal discharge—even when not ill—though symptoms typically resolve spontaneously once warmer weather arrives in spring.

Why does my baby have clear nasal discharge mixed with yellow mucus—and what should I do?

Clear nasal discharge mixed with yellow mucus in infants is commonly associated with the common cold or rhinitis and may require pharmacological intervention.

1. Cold: A highly prevalent condition, especially in infants whose immune systems are still developing. Exposure to cold temperatures predisposes them to upper respiratory infections, manifesting as cough, phlegm production, sore throat, fever, and nasal discharge—initially clear but later becoming mixed with yellow mucus. Under medical guidance, medications such as pediatric paracetamol–chlorpheniramine–pseudoephedrine granules or pediatric “Shu Qiao Qing Re” (Fermented Soybean and Forsythia) Granules may be administered. If fever develops, ibuprofen granules may also be prescribed.

2. Rhinitis: An inflammatory condition of the nasal mucosa triggered by bacterial or viral infection, genetic factors, or other causes. Symptoms include nasal congestion, sneezing, nasal itching, low-grade fever, and nasal discharge that begins as clear and progresses to include yellow mucus. During treatment, avoid exposure to pollen and refrain from consuming seafood. Under physician guidance, medications such as Bi Yuan Tong Qiao Granules (for sinusitis and rhinitis) or desloratadine dry suspension may be used.

During illness, ensure your baby drinks plenty of fluids and maintain adequate warmth.

When pathogens invade the body, the nasal mucosa increases mucus secretion to help expel them. At this stage, the clear nasal discharge contains viruses; therefore, parents should avoid blocking the infant’s nostrils. Allowing mucus to drain naturally—and promptly wiping it away—is actually more conducive to recovery.

We hope the above information is helpful. Wishing you a happy and healthy life!
