Introduction
Individuals with myopia can still develop presbyopia. Myopia is a type of refractive error, wherein parallel light rays, after passing through the cornea, lens, vitreous humor, and other refractive media, fail to focus precisely on the retina; instead, they converge in front of it—resulting in blurred vision. This condition can be corrected with eyeglasses or contact lenses, or, if surgical criteria are met, through refractive surgery.

In myopia (nearsightedness), distant objects appear blurry, while near objects remain clear. In contrast, presbyopia (age-related farsightedness) causes difficulty focusing on nearby objects, whereas distance vision remains unaffected. So, can individuals with myopia also develop presbyopia? Let’s explore this further.

Can individuals with myopia also develop presbyopia?

Yes, individuals with myopia can still develop presbyopia. Myopia is a refractive error in which parallel light rays, after passing through the cornea, lens, vitreous humor, and other refractive media of the eye, fail to focus precisely on the retina—instead converging in front of it—resulting in blurred distance vision. This condition can be corrected with prescription eyeglasses or, if surgical criteria are met, refractive surgery.

Presbyopia, on the other hand, results from age-related changes—including gradual hardening and loss of elasticity of the crystalline lens—as well as diminished contractility and regulatory function of the ciliary muscle surrounding the lens. These changes impair the eye’s ability to accommodate, leading to blurred near vision. Thus, myopia and presbyopia are fundamentally distinct conditions. Presbyopia is an inevitable, age-related phenomenon that affects virtually everyone as they grow older—even those with myopia. However, many myopic individuals experience onset of presbyopia later than non-myopic individuals.

Presbyopia is irreversible and unavoidable; the only option is to delay its onset. To help prevent premature development of presbyopia, ensure your eyes get adequate rest and maintain sufficient sleep. Additionally, if your work involves prolonged screen time, take regular breaks to gaze into the distance or perform eye exercises—both effective strategies for alleviating visual fatigue.

We hope the above information is helpful to you.
