Yellowish semen is abnormal. Normally, semen should be milky white; however, if ejaculation is infrequent over a prolonged period, the concentrated semen may appear yellow. Nevertheless, yellow discoloration is typically considered indicative of an underlying disease—such as seminal vesiculitis, often caused by infection resulting from masturbation. Is Yellowish Semen Normal?
Yellowish semen is not normal. Under normal circumstances, semen should appear milky white. However, if ejaculation has been infrequent or prolonged, concentrated semen may temporarily appear yellowish. Nevertheless, persistent yellow discoloration is typically considered a sign of underlying pathology—such as seminal vesiculitis, often resulting from infection due to excessive or unhygienic masturbation. It is advisable to consult a healthcare provider for a semen analysis to assess whether white blood cell (WBC) count in the semen is elevated. A significantly increased WBC count strongly suggests an infectious cause for the yellow discoloration.
Yellowish semen in men is treatable. Semen color is determined by its constituent components. Semen consists of spermatozoa and seminal plasma. Sperm cells constitute only a small fraction—less than 10%—whereas over 90% is seminal plasma, secreted by accessory glands including the prostate, seminal vesicles, bulbourethral glands (Cowper’s glands), and urethral glands.
Yellowish semen may be associated with various conditions, such as severe urethral irritation or chronic pelvic floor pain, often accompanied by decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, and weak erections. Patients presenting with these symptoms should pay particular attention to changes in semen color.
