What causes headaches, mental fogginess, and dizziness?
In daily life, some individuals—often workaholics under considerable stress—frequently experience headaches accompanied by mental fogginess and dizziness. What causes such symptoms of headache, mental confusion, and dizziness?
What Causes Headache, Mental Confusion, and Dizziness?
Poor sleep quality is a common cause of headache, mental fogginess, and dizziness—especially when the patient suffers from chronic sleep deprivation or consistently poor sleep. This may lead to headache and dizziness; in more severe cases, it can also be associated with memory impairment and slowed reaction time. Management primarily focuses on improving sleep hygiene and restoring healthy sleep patterns. Clinically, vestibular migraine may also present with headache and mental clouding (i.e., “fogginess”). Patients typically experience recurrent, paroxysmal episodes, each characterized by headache accompanied by dizziness. Treatment may include vestibular suppressants or oral carbamazepine, with close observation of symptom improvement.

Clinically, headache and mental fogginess may also occur in patients with hypertension. Suboptimal blood pressure control can trigger headache—typically described as a throbbing or pressing pain—and may be accompanied by dizziness or lightheadedness. Management involves regular antihypertensive medication and consistent monitoring of blood pressure.

The most common clinical diagnoses associated with these symptoms include migraine, tension-type headache, and vestibular migraine. For such patients, we recommend prioritizing adequate rest, avoiding fatigue, emotional stress, colds, or other known headache/dizziness triggers. Regular, moderate physical exercise is also encouraged to improve overall physical resilience. We hope this information proves helpful!
