Introduction
1. Upper Respiratory Tract Infection: When a child develops an upper respiratory tract infection, lying flat during sleep at night can increase airway secretions. This heightened secretion, combined with increased airway sensitivity, may trigger airway spasm and coughing. 2. Dry Indoor Air: Poor indoor air quality—such as excessively dry, polluted, or irritant-laden air—can irritate the child’s pharynx, leading to dry cough.

A few coughs during the night in children may result from upper respiratory tract infections, dry indoor air, or exposure to cold.

1. Upper respiratory tract infection: During an upper respiratory tract infection, lying flat while sleeping at night increases airway secretions and heightens airway sensitivity, potentially triggering airway spasms and coughing.

2. Dry indoor air: Poor indoor air quality—such as dust, smoke, or other irritants—can irritate a child’s throat, leading to a dry cough.

3. Exposure to cold: Inadequate warmth during sleep—especially in winter when temperatures are low—may cause a child to catch a chill, resulting in cold-related cough symptoms.

Additionally, other underlying conditions may also cause nocturnal coughing in children. Prompt medical evaluation is recommended to identify the precise cause, followed by appropriate management under a physician’s guidance.
