Introduction
First, individuals with rhinitis should avoid foods that tend to cause internal heat or are spicy, such as chili peppers and leeks. Second, they should avoid highly irritating foods, including tobacco, alcohol, and dishes that are excessively sweet or salty. Such irritants can trigger excessive mucus secretion in the body, thereby worsening rhinitis symptoms. Third, they should avoid highly acidic foods, as consuming these may directly induce a sensation of nasal congestion.

Rhinitis is an inflammatory response of the nasal mucosa triggered by bacteria, viruses, or allergens. So, what foods should be avoided in rhinitis?

Foods to Avoid with Rhinitis

First, avoid “heat-inducing” and spicy foods—such as chili peppers and leeks—which may exacerbate inflammation. Second, avoid highly irritating foods, including tobacco, alcohol, and dishes that are excessively sweet or salty. Such irritants can stimulate excessive mucus secretion, thereby worsening rhinitis symptoms. Third, avoid highly acidic foods, as they may directly trigger or intensify nasal congestion. Fourth, avoid gas-producing foods (e.g., sweet potatoes), which may cause discomfort or a sensation of abdominal fullness. Fifth, glutinous rice products—including rice cakes and zongzi (sticky rice dumplings)—are also best avoided. Sixth, known allergenic foods—such as seafood, mangoes, apricots, jujubes, and chili peppers—should be strictly avoided, as they may provoke nasal allergic reactions. Newly introduced or unfamiliar foods should likewise be approached with caution.

If allergic rhinitis is confirmed to be caused by an allergic reaction, all known allergens must be strictly avoided. For instance, if clinical testing confirms allergy to mangoes or seafood, these foods must be eliminated from the diet. If you suffer from allergic rhinitis but remain uncertain about your specific triggers, consult a healthcare provider for food intolerance testing to identify causative factors. In general, individuals with allergic rhinitis should avoid foods commonly associated with allergic sensitization. Patients with posterior sinusitis—particularly those presenting with chronic yellow nasal discharge and dry tongue coating—should also avoid “heaty” foods, such as chocolate, peanuts, sunflower seeds, sugar, fried or grilled foods, hotpot, and beef or mutton, as these may aggravate the condition.

Therefore, if you have previously identified any foods that trigger allergic reactions, it is advisable to avoid them entirely during active rhinitis episodes. We hope this information proves helpful!
