Introduction
Neutrophils account for more than half of the total white blood cell count in circulating blood, with an absolute value ranging from 1.8 to 6.3 × 10⁹/L. Neutrophils are one type of granulocyte; in peripheral blood smears, neutrophils with band-shaped (stab) nuclei can be observed. Their cytoplasm is abundant and contains numerous small, uniform, specific granules. Neutrophils do not weaken the body’s immunity or increase disease susceptibility—in fact, they play a critical role in innate immunity by defending against bacterial and fungal infections.

Neutrophils are one type of white blood cell, and neutrophilic band cells can be observed in peripheral blood. Their cytoplasm is abundant and contains numerous fine, evenly distributed, characteristic granules. So, what is the normal reference range for the absolute neutrophil count (ANC)?

Normal Reference Range for Absolute Neutrophil Count

Neutrophils account for over half of all white blood cells circulating in the bloodstream. The normal absolute neutrophil count ranges from 1.8 to 6.3 × 10⁹/L. Neutrophils are a major type of white blood cell; neutrophilic band cells can be identified in peripheral blood. Their cytoplasm is abundant and contains many fine, evenly distributed, characteristic granules.

Neutrophils serve as primary effector cells of the body’s innate immune system and play a critical role in mediating inflammatory responses and immune defense. They rapidly phagocytose, kill, and degrade pathogenic microorganisms—including bacteria and fungi—and constitute the first line of defense in the body’s nonspecific immune system. Elevated neutrophil counts commonly occur in conditions such as acute infection, severe tissue injury, massive destruction of blood cells, acute hemorrhage, and acute poisoning. Conversely, neutropenia (low neutrophil count) impairs immune function and increases susceptibility to infectious diseases.

If neutrophil abnormalities are detected, it is recommended to consult a healthcare provider to determine the underlying cause and receive appropriate treatment. Additionally, incorporating regular physical exercise into daily life can help strengthen overall immunity. We hope this article has been helpful to you—wishing you a joyful life and good health!
