Drinking beer alone does not directly cause weight gain. The primary ingredients of beer—barley, hops, and water—have relatively low caloric content. Specifically, the average energy content of beer is approximately 80 kJ (about 32 kcal) per 100 mL, which is not particularly high compared with other foods such as rice or potatoes. However, although beer itself is low in calories, excessive consumption—or pairing it with high-calorie foods such as grilled meats or fatty dishes—can lead to excessive caloric intake and subsequently contribute to obesity. Beer is a “pure energy” beverage; overconsumption therefore readily promotes caloric accumulation in the body. While drinking beer alone does not directly cause weight gain, it is important to moderate intake and avoid consuming it alongside high-calorie foods.
