Can I exercise during a gout attack?
Disease description:
I have had gout for six months. I enjoy exercising regularly—may I engage in physical exercise during a gout flare-up?
During a gout flare-up, physical exercise should be avoided. If the pain is particularly severe, bed rest is recommended. Gout flares commonly trigger gouty arthritis, leading to intense joint pain and swelling. Gout is typically caused by elevated uric acid levels; therefore, it is important to avoid high-purine foods—such as seafood and organ meats—and to drink plenty of plain water to promote uric acid excretion.
