Can I receive the COVID-19 vaccine if I have diarrhea?
Disease description:
I’m planning to get the COVID-19 vaccine today, but I developed diarrhea this morning. I’d like to know whether it’s safe to receive the vaccine while experiencing diarrhea.
Diarrhea is a reason to postpone COVID-19 vaccination. Most cases of diarrhea result from intestinal inflammation, which may impair immune function and can sometimes be accompanied by fever. Receiving the COVID-19 vaccine during an episode of diarrhea could potentially trigger or exacerbate adverse reactions—such as nausea or dizziness—or compromise vaccine efficacy due to suboptimal immune function. Although isolated diarrhea is not a strict contraindication to COVID-19 vaccination, it is generally advisable to defer vaccination until symptoms have resolved.
