Symptoms of Taking Too Much Levothyroxine
Disease description:
Two years ago, my aunt was diagnosed with renal cysts. She became significantly emaciated and fatigued, but her condition improved somewhat after surgery. Since then, she has been recuperating at home. Unfortunately, she was recently diagnosed with thyroid cancer, and her doctor prescribed levothyroxine (Euthyrox). Could you please explain the symptoms of levothyroxine overdose?
The primary active ingredient in Euthyrox is thyroid hormone. Thyroid hormone increases heart rate and myocardial oxygen consumption; in patients with coronary artery disease, this may trigger angina pectoris. Excessive oral intake of thyroid hormone can lead to symptoms such as tachycardia and elevated blood pressure. Following thyroidectomy for thyroid cancer, patients develop thyroid hormone deficiency and therefore require oral thyroid hormone replacement therapy.
