What Is a Mucocele?
Disease description:
I’ve been feeling some discomfort in my mouth lately. After visiting the hospital, I was diagnosed with a mucocele. What is a mucocele?
Mucoceles are superficial cysts that primarily result from obstruction of the ducts of minor salivary glands in the oral mucosa, leading to impaired normal glandular function and excessive accumulation of secretions. This condition is a common oral mucosal disorder, typically caused by minor trauma to the oral mucosa resulting in rupture of salivary gland tissue. Mucoceles most frequently occur on the lip mucosa and the ventral surface of the tongue.
