Are pericardial cysts serious?
Disease description:
Recently, my mother has experienced palpitations and chest tightness, so she went to the hospital for evaluation. A cardiac ultrasound revealed a pericardial cyst. How serious is a pericardial cyst?
Pericardial cysts are generally not serious; when small, they do not affect daily life and require no treatment—only regular follow-up examinations at the hospital. However, if pronounced symptoms such as dizziness or palpitations occur, this suggests the cyst has grown large enough to compress the heart, posing a certain risk to health and thus warranting clinical concern. In such cases, prompt surgical removal is necessary. After surgery, adequate rest is essential, and patients should consume a high-protein diet.
