Can people with gout eat bean sprouts?
Disease description:
I’ve suffered from gout for many years. Now that I’m older, it occasionally flares up, and I need to be especially careful about my diet during these episodes. I’d like to know: Can people with gout eat bean sprouts?
Patients with gout are advised to avoid consuming bean sprouts. Bean sprouts are primarily derived from germinated soybeans or mung beans and contain very high levels of purines. Consumption can increase the metabolic burden of purine metabolism, elevate serum uric acid levels, and impose additional metabolic strain on kidney function—thereby worsening the condition.
Additionally, gout patients should avoid other high-purine foods, such as yeast powder, chicken breast, and animal organ meats—including pork liver, lamb liver, pork intestine, and pork brain—as well as certain seafood, such as hairtail fish, sardines, anchovies, whiteleg shrimp, and scallops. They should also avoid rich broths and hotpot soup.
