Is it safe for gout patients to eat Chinese yam?
Disease description:
I personally enjoy eating Chinese yam, but I’ve been unwell lately and have had a gout flare-up. I’d like to ask: Is it safe for people with gout to eat Chinese yam?
Patients with gout can consume Chinese yam (Dioscorea opposita). Gout is a crystalline arthritis caused by hyperuricemia; therefore, individuals with gout must restrict their dietary purine intake. During the acute phase, patients are advised to consume low-purine foods, whereas during the chronic or intercritical phases, moderate-purine foods may be consumed in moderation. Chinese yam is classified as a low-purine food, containing approximately 10 mg of purines per 100 g.
