Gout: Can Asparagus Be Eaten?
Disease description:
I love eating asparagus, but I also have gout. May I ask: Is it safe for people with gout to eat asparagus?
Gout patients should limit their intake of asparagus. Although asparagus is classified as a moderate-purine food, fresh asparagus contains relatively high levels of insoluble oxalates, which may also contribute to elevated uric acid levels; therefore, it is advisable to avoid it altogether. Generally, low-purine foods—including mustard greens, cabbage, radishes, tomatoes, cucumbers, eggplants, onions, potatoes, peaches, apricots, pears, bananas, and apples—are safe for gout patients to consume regularly.
