Disease description:

Lately, I’ve been experiencing persistent pain in my buttocks for no apparent reason. The pain is particularly noticeable when sitting, and I’ve also noticed a small amount of blood on the toilet paper after bowel movements. Could you please advise which medical specialty I should consult for buttock pain?

Dr. Cheng Yicheng
If you experience soreness or pain in the buttocks, you should generally consult an orthopedic surgeon or a spinal surgeon. Joint-related conditions—particularly those involving the hip joint—can also cause buttock discomfort. The most common cause of buttock soreness is lumbar disc herniation compressing a nerve root, leading to aching, swelling, and pain in the buttock region innervated by that nerve. Hip joint disorders may likewise manifest as buttock pain. Additionally, injury or overuse of the piriformis muscle in the buttock can produce similar symptoms of soreness or pain. We hope this information is helpful. Wishing you good health!
