Hazards of Cervical Erosion
Disease description:
I was just diagnosed with cervical erosion, and previously I had experienced increased vaginal discharge. What are the potential risks of cervical erosion?
Increased vaginal discharge, cervical cancer, and infertility are the primary consequences—not causes—of cervical ectropion (commonly but inaccurately termed “cervical erosion”). Early signs of cervical ectropion include increased vaginal discharge, abnormal odor, occasional pelvic discomfort or aching, and blood-tinged discharge. Abnormal vaginal discharge caused by cervical ectropion is often accompanied by inflammatory spread, which impairs sperm motility and penetration through the cervical mucus, thereby compromising fertility. Severe cases of cervical ectropion frequently lead to infertility. Cervical ectropion is a potentially serious condition, as chronic inflammation may induce endometrial changes.
