How to differentiate between trichomoniasis vaginitis and bacterial vaginosis
Disease description:
I've recently been experiencing persistent itching of the vulva, and I'm worried that I might have vaginitis. I know there are several types of vaginitis, among which trichomonas vaginitis and bacterial vaginosis are relatively common. How can these two types be distinguished?
Trichomonas vaginitis and bacterial vaginosis are caused by different pathogens. The pathogen for trichomonas vaginitis is Trichomonas vaginalis, whereas bacterial vaginosis is caused by Gardnerella vaginalis and other anaerobic bacteria. Trichomonas vaginitis leads to intense itching of the vulva, accompanied by congestion and edema of the vulvar mucosa. In contrast, itching caused by bacterial vaginosis is usually mild and generally not associated with congestion or edema of the vaginal mucosa.
