Disease description:

I'm seventeen years old, and this month my period is several days later than usual. I've never experienced this before, and I'm a bit worried it might be due to a medical condition. Is it normal for a 17-year-old girl to have a delayed period?

It is normal for 17-year-old girls to be more concerned about delaying their periods. Since 17-year-old girls are in puberty, and during this stage ovarian development is incomplete—meaning the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis is not fully matured—it's common to experience irregular menstrual cycles. Periods may come earlier or later than expected, or even occur several months apart. Generally, irregular menstrual cycles within five years after menarche are considered normal. Additionally, if a 17-year-old girl has had sexual intercourse without contraception and her period is delayed, pregnancy should also be ruled out.
