Symptoms of Excess Androgens in Women
Disease description:
I’ve been experiencing irregular menstrual cycles lately, and—more notably—the hair on my arms has become unusually coarse and long, which suggests elevated androgen levels. I’d like to learn: What are the signs of high androgen levels in women?
Hello,
Infertility can be associated with hormonal imbalances in women. While the female body naturally produces both estrogen and androgens, androgens normally constitute only a small proportion. However, in some women, excessive androgen secretion disrupts hormonal balance, which may lead to infertility.
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is one such condition: chronically elevated testosterone levels combined with relatively low estrogen levels suppress follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), impairing ovarian follicular development and maturation. As a result, ovulation fails to occur, and immature follicles accumulate as fluid-filled cysts—ultimately leading to polycystic ovaries.
Additional symptoms may include hirsutism (excessive body hair), acne, and menstrual irregularities.
We hope the above information is helpful to you. Wishing you a happy and healthy life!
