Disease description:

I am currently pregnant and have been experiencing some constipation recently. I'm not sure if I can use Kaisailu (a brand of glycerin enema). May I ask, is it safe for pregnant women to use Kaisailu?

Dr. Zhao Xiaodong
Laxatives such as glycerin suppositories (Kaisailu) can be used by pregnant women, but the following points should be noted: 1. Safety: Glycerin suppositories primarily work through the high osmotic pressure of glycerin to soften stool. The active ingredients do not enter the bloodstream nor cross the placental barrier, so they do not affect the fetus. 2. Frequency of use: Pregnant women should avoid frequent use of glycerin suppositories, as this may adversely stimulate the uterus and induce uterine contractions, potentially leading to premature labor or miscarriage. Use should be under medical supervision, and it is generally recommended to use only half a suppository at a time. 3. Precautions: Pregnant women should stay relaxed and avoid excessive tension when using glycerin suppositories. Proper administration technique and body position should be observed to prevent local injury to the anal area. Glycerin suppositories can be used as an emergency measure for constipation during pregnancy, but long-term use should be avoided to prevent dependency. Pregnant women should consult their doctor before use to ensure medication safety.
