Disease description:

When Mom gets bitten by a mosquito, she presses a cross on the bite mark, saying that this will stop the itching. Today I also got bitten by a mosquito, and Mom said she would do the same for me, but I'm afraid it will hurt. I wonder, is pressing a cross on a mosquito bite actually effective?

Pressing a cross shape on the bite area after being bitten by a mosquito may temporarily relieve itching, but it does not address the underlying problem. During the pressing, the pressure and pain signals sensed by the skin can inhibit the transmission of itch signals, thereby alleviating the itching to some extent. However, this effect is only temporary, and pressing or scratching the skin may also damage the skin and lead to infections. Specifically, pressing or scratching disrupts the integrity of the skin, making it easier for bacteria to invade and cause skin infections. Furthermore, frequent and prolonged pressing or scratching may trigger skin inflammation and bruising. Therefore, pressing a cross shape is not recommended as a method to relieve itching after a mosquito bite. More appropriate approaches include washing the affected area with soap and water, applying anti-itch medications such as mosquito repellent lotion or essential balm, or using cold compresses to alleviate symptoms. If severe swelling, redness, blisters, or other serious symptoms occur after the bite, prompt medical attention should be sought.
