Herpes labialis is not herpes zoster. Although both are viral infectious diseases, they differ in terms of causative viruses and clinical manifestations. Herpes labialis is primarily caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV), and is a skin and mucous membrane disease commonly occurring on or near the lips. It is characterized by recurrence, especially when the body's immunity declines, or during fatigue or stress. The disease course is relatively short, typically resolving spontaneously within 7 to 10 days; however, recovery may be slower without appropriate treatment. In contrast, herpes zoster is caused by infection with the varicella-zoster virus (VZV). It typically presents as a rash and blisters distributed along nerves, accompanied by intense neuropathic pain. Herpes zoster has a longer disease course and may lead to severe complications such as optic neuritis and encephalitis. Therefore, prompt antiviral treatment is necessary.
