Can people with gout eat melon seeds and peanuts?
Disease description:
I've been suffering from gout pain these days and need to control my diet accordingly. I'd like to know, can I eat melon seeds and peanuts with gout?
Gout patients can eat melon seeds and peanuts, but the quantity should be adjusted according to the stage of the disease. During the intercritical period of gout, when patients do not exhibit symptoms such as joint swelling or pain, they can consume melon seeds and peanuts in moderation. Both of these foods belong to the category of nuts and contain certain amounts of purines, although the levels are not excessively high. Moderate consumption generally does not cause significant adverse effects on gout. However, melon seeds and peanuts are also high in fat and calories, and excessive consumption may lead to obesity, which is detrimental to the long-term management of gout. During an acute gout attack, patients should avoid consuming melon seeds and peanuts. At this stage, blood uric acid levels are already elevated, and consuming these moderately purine-rich foods may further increase uric acid levels and worsen the condition. Patients should follow a low-purine diet, avoid high-purine foods such as animal offal and seafood, and drink plenty of water and urinate frequently to promote the excretion of uric acid.
