Can people with gout eat seaweed?
Disease description:
After my father developed gout, he had many dietary restrictions and completely avoided seafood. Last night, he accidentally ate some seaweed sheets (nori) without realizing it. I would like to ask whether people with gout can eat seaweed sheets (nori).
Gout patients are not advised to consume seaweed, mainly for the following reasons:
1. High purine content: As a type of seafood, seaweed has relatively high purine levels. When gout patients consume foods high in purines, it can lead to elevated uric acid levels in the body, potentially triggering or worsening gout symptoms.
2. Effects of additives: Commercially available seaweed often contains salt, monosodium glutamate (MSG), sugar, and various additives. These substances are detrimental to the health of gout patients and may increase treatment challenges and complicate disease management.
3. Health risks: Excessive consumption of seaweed not only raises uric acid levels in the body but may also place additional strain on organs such as the kidneys, further affecting the overall health status of gout patients.
