My father used to really enjoy eating vermicelli, but he has not eaten it at all since being diagnosed with gout. I would like to ask whether patients with gout can still eat vermicelli?

Dr. Yang Ziqi
Gout patients can consume vermicelli, but should do so in moderation and be mindful of their disease stage. Vermicelli is primarily made from mung bean or sweet potato starch and has a relatively low purine content, containing approximately 11.1-75 mg of purines per 100 grams, classifying it as a low- to moderate-purine food. Therefore, during the stable phase of gout, patients may consume moderate amounts of vermicelli as part of their meals without significantly affecting their condition. However, during an acute gout attack, patients should strictly limit their intake of high-purine foods. Although vermicelli has a relatively low purine content, its overall consumption should still be controlled to avoid placing additional strain on the body. In addition, gout patients should focus on consuming more low-purine foods, such as fresh vegetables and fruits, to promote uric acid excretion and maintain disease stability.
