How many days does it take for a young person's strained waist to recover?
When bending over to lift something heavy, I accidentally strained my lower back. How many days does it usually take for young people to recover?
Lumbar sprain or "a slipped waist" is one of the common acute injuries, especially prevalent among young people. This injury is usually caused by sudden twisting, bending over, or lifting heavy objects, resulting in excessive stretching or tearing of the lumbar muscles, ligaments, or small joints. Due to their stronger tissue repair capability, young people typically recover faster than middle-aged and elderly individuals.
1. Mild injury: Generally speaking, mild lumbar muscle strain or sprain, if treated promptly and appropriately along with adequate rest, may recover within about a week. During this period, intermittent cold compresses are recommended to reduce swelling and pain, followed later by heat application to promote blood circulation. In addition, oral anti-inflammatory and analgesic medications, local massage, and other treatments can also help alleviate symptoms.
2. Moderate injury: If the injury involves deeper muscles or ligaments and is accompanied by more noticeable swelling and pain, recovery may take between two weeks and one month. During this phase, physical therapies such as heat application and ultrasound treatment are recommended to promote blood circulation and tissue repair.
3. Severe injury: In severe cases, such as those accompanied by lumbar vertebral fractures or ligament ruptures, the recovery period may be prolonged and surgical treatment might even be required. In such situations, the recovery time could last for several months or longer.
