I'm afraid I'm getting older, and I accidentally strained my lower back, which is now somewhat painful. Doctor, when experiencing a strained lower back, is it better to lie flat or to lie on one's stomach?

Lumbar sprain, commonly known as "waist sprain," generally speaking, lying flat allows the waist to receive better support, helping to reduce pressure on the lumbar spine, promote muscle relaxation and recovery, and is therefore a recommended posture.

If pain worsens while lying flat, you can place a small pillow under the knees to help maintain the natural curvature of the spine and relieve muscle tension. Although lying on the stomach may temporarily relieve pain, maintaining this position for a long time may be detrimental to the relaxation of the lumbar muscles and blood circulation; therefore, it is not recommended to maintain this posture for long periods, especially if the sprain involves intervertebral discs or nerves.

Try to avoid physical activity until the pain subsides. If the pain persists or is accompanied by symptoms such as numbness or tingling in the lower limbs, it is recommended to seek medical attention promptly.
