My grandfather has had high blood sugar levels, and he mentioned that he has recently felt his heart rate is also abnormal. I would like to ask about the relationship between high blood sugar and heart rate.

There is no direct correlation between high blood glucose and heart rate, but in some cases, a certain association exists.

Blood glucose can affect the autonomic nervous system. Particularly in the case of prolonged hyperglycemia, it may lead to diabetic neuropathy, which affects autonomic nerve regulation of the heart, thereby causing changes in heart rate. When blood glucose levels continuously rise and meet the diagnostic criteria for diabetes, it may trigger a series of complications, such as diabetic ketoacidosis or hyperglycemic hyperosmolar syndrome. These complications can cause dehydration, acidosis, and electrolyte disturbances, leading to sinus tachycardia and even arrhythmias. For example, hyperglycemia may reduce heart rate variability, manifesting as increased resting heart rate or a diminished heart rate response to physical activity. Moreover, high blood glucose may indirectly affect heart rate by increasing blood viscosity, promoting vascular inflammation, and accelerating atherosclerosis, thereby elevating the risk of cardiovascular events. Additionally, medications used to lower blood glucose in patients with hyperglycemia may also contribute to an increased heart rate.

Therefore, patients with high blood glucose should be closely monitored for changes in heart rate, and appropriate treatment measures should be promptly implemented.
