Brown vaginal discharge is most commonly a sign of vaginal mucosal injury, often caused by vaginitis. The vaginal mucosa is relatively delicate; severe irritation can lead to bleeding, and subsequent bacterial interference may alter the color of the discharge, resulting in a brownish hue. Cervical disorders—such as cervical polyps or cervical cysts with associated bleeding—should also be considered as potential causes of brown discharge.
