In the early stage of HIV infection, patients commonly exhibit localized redness of the tongue. This is typically accompanied by fever, decreased appetite, fatigue, and weight loss. As the disease progresses, a thick, white, membranous coating develops on the tongue’s surface, and the tongue coating becomes increasingly greasy and heavy. Some patients may also develop oral conditions such as oral candidiasis (thrush).
