Introduction
There are many causes of bruxism (teeth grinding) in children. It may result from oral factors, systemic diseases, or psychological factors. First and foremost, the most common cause is oral disease—for example, gingivitis, periodontal disease, oral ulcers, or pharyngeal herpes—any of which may cause oral pain and discomfort, thereby triggering bruxism in children.

Bruxism (teeth grinding) is a very common oral condition, especially prevalent among children. So, what causes teeth grinding in children?

What Causes Teeth Grinding in Children?

There are numerous potential causes of bruxism in children. It may result from oral factors, systemic diseases, or psychological factors. The most common cause is oral disease—for instance, gingivitis, periodontal disease, oral ulcers, or pharyngeal herpes—any of which may cause oral pain and discomfort, thereby triggering teeth grinding. Additionally, during teething, children often experience localized gum itching and may unconsciously grind their teeth to relieve this sensation. Certain systemic conditions can also contribute to bruxism, such as intestinal parasitic infections (e.g., ascariasis or enterobiasis). Beyond medical causes, excessive tension, anxiety, or even overexcitement—and the resulting poor sleep quality—may also lead to teeth grinding.

Frequent bruxism in children can adversely affect the normal development of teeth and periodontal tissues. In severe cases, it may even cause dental malocclusion, impairing chewing function. Moreover, persistent teeth grinding significantly disrupts sleep quality, potentially interfering with normal neurological development—including slower growth in height and weight, delayed motor development, and possibly even impaired cognitive development compared with peers.

Therefore, parents are advised to actively identify the underlying cause of their child’s bruxism and seek timely, targeted treatment to prevent dental damage. We hope this information has been helpful.
