Introduction
When stretch marks (striae gravidarum) become itchy, topical application of polysulfated mucopolysaccharide cream or anti-itch ointment—combined with oral antihistamines—can help relieve pruritus. In most cases, stretch marks require no treatment; however, for cosmetic reasons, interventions such as fractional laser therapy may be employed to help fade their appearance. Stretch marks—also known as atrophic striae or striae distensae—are localized, distension-induced skin lesions resulting from the rupture of dermal elastic fibers due to various underlying causes.

During pregnancy, women developing stretch marks may experience itching. What should be done if stretch marks cause itching?

What to Do When Stretch Marks Itch

For itchiness associated with stretch marks, topical application of mucopolysaccharide polysulfate cream or anti-itch ointment—combined with oral antihistamines—can help relieve symptoms. In most cases, stretch marks require no specific treatment; however, for cosmetic reasons, interventions such as fractional laser therapy may be considered to help fade them.Stretch marks—also known as atrophic striae or striae distensae—are caused by rupture of dermal elastic fibers due to various factors, resulting in localized, distension-related skin changes. They commonly appear on the abdomen, buttocks, breasts, and thighs, often triggered by endocrine-related factors—for example, rapid fetal growth during pregnancy leading to abdominal stretch mark formation.

Rapid growth during puberty may cause stretch marks on the thighs and buttocks; similarly, rapid breast enlargement during lactation may lead to stretch marks on the breasts. Clinically, stretch marks typically present as purplish-red, linear, atrophic striae aligned with natural skin lines. Affected areas show slight elevation and thinning of the skin, with visible fine subcutaneous capillaries; some individuals may experience mild pruritus. Over time, the purplish-red color of these atrophic striae gradually fades, eventually returning to normal skin tone or appearing white.

During pregnancy, it is advisable to frequently change body positions—avoid prolonged lying, standing, or sitting. Especially for working expectant mothers, getting up and walking around every hour can help minimize premature development of stretch marks. We hope this article has been helpful to you!
