What Is Androgenetic Alopecia?
Androgens are hormones that promote the maturation of male sexual organs and the development of secondary sexual characteristics, and they help maintain normal libido and reproductive function. So, what is androgenetic alopecia?
What Is Androgenetic Alopecia?
Androgenetic alopecia refers to hair loss occurring primarily on the crown and vertex of the scalp, caused by elevated levels of androgens—particularly dihydrotestosterone (DHT)—in the body. It commonly affects men with high testosterone levels. The human body produces a potent androgen called dihydrotestosterone (DHT), also known as a metabolite of testosterone. When androgen levels are elevated, testosterone can be converted into DHT by an enzyme called 5-alpha reductase. Increased DHT levels cause miniaturization of hair follicles, resulting in progressively finer, thinner, and shorter hairs until the follicles eventually cease producing hair altogether—leading to androgenetic alopecia. This condition is characterized mainly by progressive thinning and hair loss on the crown and vertex of the scalp, predominantly affecting men with high testosterone levels, though some women may also be affected.

Androgenetic alopecia often presents with symptoms such as increased dandruff, oily scalp, and itching. It is also known as seborrheic alopecia, male-pattern baldness, or hereditary alopecia. Patients frequently exhibit excessive sebum secretion from the scalp, particularly common among young individuals with highly active sebaceous glands. Hair tends to be soft and fine, often accompanied by signs of seborrheic dermatitis. Patients should maintain good scalp hygiene and minimize intake of spicy or irritating foods.

Moreover, genetic predisposition is the primary cause of androgenetic alopecia. Additionally, unhealthy lifestyle habits—including consumption of overly spicy foods, chronic stress, sleep deprivation, smoking, and alcohol consumption—can also contribute to its development.
