How to regulate melasma internally
Melasma is a relatively common facial skin pigmentation disorder, predominantly affecting middle-aged women. It is directly associated with prolonged sun exposure, tends to have a protracted course, and is prone to recurrence. So, how can melasma be managed internally?
Internal Regulation for Melasma
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the treatment of melasma focuses on promoting the flow of Qi, resolving blood stasis, invigorating blood circulation, transforming phlegm, and eliminating dampness—or alternatively, tonifying the kidneys and nourishing Yin. Since melasma manifests differently among individuals, TCM treatment emphasizes syndrome differentiation and individualized therapy tailored to each woman’s specific clinical presentation, thereby optimizing therapeutic efficacy. According to TCM theory, melasma primarily arises from impaired Qi and blood circulation and deficiency of the spleen and kidneys, resulting in facial hyperpigmentation. It may also involve phlegm-damp obstruction or blood vessel stasis, leading to blood stasis within the meridians.

For individuals with liver-kidney Yin deficiency, Liu Wei Di Huang Wan (Rehmannia Six Formula) or Zi Bu Gan Shen Wan (Liver-Kidney Tonifying Pills) may be prescribed. Those with Qi stagnation and disharmonious Qi and blood flow may benefit from Xiao Yao Wan (Free and Easy Wanderer Pills), Shu Gan Wan (Liver-Soothing Pills), or Wu Ji Bai Feng Wan (Black-Boned Silky Chicken and White Phoenix Pills). For blood stasis patterns, Tao Hong Si Wu Tang (Peach Kernel and Safflower Four-Ingredient Decoction) or Tong Luo Huo Xue Tang (Meridian-Opening and Blood-Activating Decoction), modified as appropriate, are commonly used. In daily life, consume vitamin C–rich fruits and vegetables such as tomatoes, kiwifruit, and citrus fruits (e.g., oranges and tangerines); maintain a positive mood; ensure adequate sleep each night; and practice rigorous sun protection—applying broad-spectrum sunscreen at least 30 minutes before going outdoors.

If internal regulation yields unsatisfactory results, patients may seek treatment at a reputable medical institution using physical modalities—such as intense pulsed light (IPL) photorejuvenation or fractional laser therapy—which can help improve melasma and restore smooth, even-toned skin.
