Introduction
Swollen and painful gums due to "heatiness," accompanied by a small bump, may resolve without medication if the condition does not worsen and if good daily habits are maintained. However, medication may be necessary if symptoms become more severe. It is important to drink plenty of water, eat light and easily digestible foods, and consume more fresh fruits and vegetables. Avoid spicy, greasy, and irritating foods such as chili peppers and fatty meats. Stay relaxed, avoid anger, and do not stay up late.

Swollen and painful gums due to "internal heat" (shang huo), accompanied by a small bump, may resolve without medication if the condition does not worsen and healthy lifestyle habits are adopted. However, if symptoms intensify, medical treatment is necessary.

"Internal heat" falls under the category of heat syndromes in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It results from an imbalance of yin and yang in the body, leading to excessive internal fire. Specific symptoms include red and swollen eyes, mouth ulcers, dark yellow urine, toothaches, and sore throat. It can be classified into two main types: excess fire (real fire) and deficiency fire (virtual fire), affecting organs such as the heart, lungs, stomach, liver, and kidneys.

In general, patients experiencing "internal heat" often develop swollen and painful gums—a relatively common symptom. If the condition is severe, it may also involve the development of a small bump. If gum swelling and pain do not worsen and the bump does not grow larger, medication may not be required. It is recommended that patients drink more water and consume fruits such as apples, pears, and bananas, which help moisten the lungs, generate body fluids, nourish yin, relieve dryness, and enhance immune function. Additionally, patients should ensure good indoor ventilation by frequently opening windows to maintain fresh and humid air. If gum pain becomes increasingly severe and the bump continues to enlarge, spontaneous recovery is unlikely. In such cases, patients should promptly visit a hospital and, under medical guidance, take fire-reducing medications such as Yangyin Qingfei Pills or Xiongdan Chuanbei Oral Liquid to alleviate discomfort.

Note: Drink plenty of water, maintain a light and easily digestible diet, and eat more fresh fruits and vegetables. Avoid spicy, greasy, and drying foods such as chili peppers and fatty meats. Stay relaxed, avoid anger, and do not stay up late. These measures can effectively prevent "internal heat."
