What causes thick shoulder muscles?
Thickened shoulders may be caused by obesity, local soft tissue irritation, tumors, or other reasons.
1. Obesity
Thickened shoulders may result from excessive body weight. In individuals who are overweight, excess fat accumulation in the shoulder area can make the shoulders appear thicker. Patients should increase physical activity and control their diet in daily life to help improve the condition of thickened shoulders.
2. Local Soft Tissue Irritation
If the local soft tissues are continuously irritated, scar tissue hyperplasia may develop. Maintaining the same posture for prolonged periods or repeatedly performing certain movements can lead to repeated contraction of the soft tissues around the shoulders, resulting in the appearance of thickened shoulders. It is recommended that patients stay active and avoid maintaining a single posture for extended periods.
3. Tumor
If there is noticeable asymmetry in shoulder thickness or the presence of hard lumps, it could indicate a tumor in the shoulder area causing the thickening. In such cases, medical evaluation at a hospital is advised. If a tumor is diagnosed, timely surgical removal under a doctor's guidance is necessary.
In addition, thickened shoulders may also be related to forward head posture. If there are no discomfort symptoms, specific treatment may not be required.
