There is a yellowish-brown ring around the pupil.
A yellowish-brown ring around the pupil may be caused by physiological factors, or it could result from pathological conditions such as pigmentation or conjunctival proliferation. Etiological treatment is recommended.
I. Physiological Factors
This may be due to chronic sleep deprivation or poor eye-use habits. It is considered a normal physiological phenomenon and usually resolves spontaneously with adequate rest, without requiring special treatment.
II. Pathological Factors
1. Pigmentation
Prolonged exposure of the eyes to ultraviolet radiation may lead to deposition of pigment in the retina, resulting in pigmentation. Under medical guidance, antibiotic eye drops can be used for treatment. Commonly prescribed medications include levofloxacin eye drops, tobramycin eye drops, and chloramphenicol eye drops, which help promote the fading of pigmentation.
2. Conjunctival Proliferation
This may occur due to poor eye hygiene leading to pathogenic bacterial infection and subsequent conjunctival proliferation. Anti-inflammatory ointments should be applied as directed by a physician, such as erythromycin eye ointment, chlortetracycline eye ointment, or tetracycline eye ointment, which help prevent and treat infection.
In addition, this symptom could also be related to cataracts. It is recommended to identify the underlying cause before initiating treatment.
